Spring Activities for Seniors in Annapolis

Springtime in Annapolis is unlike anywhere else. Imagine enjoying sun-filled skies, blooming flowers, and warm, breezy weather as you walk down Main Street or along the waterfront. The capital city of Maryland provides an idyllic backdrop for getting back outside after a long winter and visiting local attractions.

At The Village at Providence Point—A National Lutheran Community, we seek to provide independent living residents with a vibrant, active lifestyle during the spring, and our Annapolis location will help us achieve this. Explore these spring activities for older adults seeking new, fulfilling opportunities in Annapolis.

Visit the waterfront

There's no better way to bask in the warm weather than being near water. Due to Annapolis' prime location along the Chesapeake Bay, the city offers breathtaking views of surrounding waterways and ample recreational opportunities for older adults seeking adventure.

Head down to the waterfront to catch a relaxing boat ride or rent a kayak, paddleboard, or canoe to add some excitement to your day. The waterfront also offers plenty of nautical-themed land activities, including the Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park, if you prefer staying dry.

Consider stopping by a local restaurant while out and about. Annapolis' waterfront restaurants range from fine dining establishments to casual crab shacks, offering an option for every occasion.

Go on a Watermark Cruise

Explore the Chesapeake Bay from a different perspective by embarking on a Watermark Cruise. Watermark's boat tours offer an immersive experience into the history, culture, and lifestyle of Annapolis and the surrounding Chesapeake Bay area.

If you want to learn more about the city's rich naval history, consider the 40-minute narrated Annapolis Harbor and U.S. Naval Academy tour. Get a feel for the city's residential life by stepping aboard the Spa Creek Cruise, a 40-minute tour of old Annapolis and Eastport, to see if you can imagine spending retirement here.

Watermark also offers guided walking tours that delve into various aspects of Annapolis' fascinating history. Take the Maryland State House Tour to explore one of the most historically significant state houses in Maryland, or spend 90 minutes hearing jaw-dropping tales straight from the city's famed homes and taverns with Scandalous Annapolis

Visit the William Paca House

If you're looking for a mix of indoor and outdoor enjoyment, visit the William Paca House. This Georgian mansion was built in the 1760s by William Paca, who served as Maryland's third governor and one of the state's four signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Historic Maryland renovated the home in 1965, earning it a National Historic Landmark designation. Today, you can enjoy guided tours of the mansion's preserved period furnishings and historic artwork. Explore the grounds to soak in sights of terraced landscapes, native and heirloom plants, and an impressive kitchen garden. The house also schedules group tours with advanced notice.

Take a picnic to the Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park

Nestled in the southern terminus of the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, the Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park offers sweeping views of Severn River and the nearby Naval Academy and State Capitol. There's never a dull moment here for nature lovers. The park features a 288-foot fishing pier with picnic tables to post up at to enjoy your favorite snacks and beverages with friends.

You can also lay down a blanket on the park's sandy shores and watch passing boats while soaking up the warm sun. Additionally, the park features a fire pit and benches scattered throughout its landscaped grounds, allowing you to picnic among decorative statues and blooming flower bushes.

After enjoying scenic views while indulging in good food and stimulating conversations, explore one of the park's trails to spend time immersed in nature. Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park serves as the headquarters for the Anne Arundel County Trail System, offering ample hiking opportunities.

Explore Main Street

Being a 10-minute drive from the heart of Annapolis, The Village at Providence Point will provide easy access to the city's bustling Main Street, an eclectic downtown area boasting 21st-century amenities with 18th-century charm. In this historic section of Annapolis, there's always something new to explore.
